Biography

- Charlotte Bernström is a Swedish-American painter whose contemporary canvases are poetic explorations about our innate connection with Nature.

Born and raised in Sweden, Charlotte grew up in a unique environment permeated with art.  She began practicing painting in Nature at age 5. Charlotte was mentored by her grandfather, painter Lennart Schultzberg, who came up with innovative ways of teaching a young child perspective, color theory and the use of different mediums. He taught her to see, to listen and to feel with all of her senses in the outdoors and how to translate those qualities through paint. This ancestral knowledge and wisdom was passed down through Lennart from his father Anshelm Scultzberg, a renowned Swedish painter and international curator.

In her early twenties, Charlotte relocated to San Francisco, and studied at the Academy of Art University and the California College of the Arts. Although her roots were in European Impressionism, her paintings slowly morphed into abstraction as she got a closer look at Abstract Expressionism; the first truly homegrown American art movement. Charlotte had the opportunity to know several pioneers of the movement, visiting their studios and getting a rare insight into their lives and creativity. This exposed Charlotte to a world that would gradually become her own.
